According to the 1989 Conklin Family Reunion Video Tape, Wendell was born with a "hairlip". His father, being a dentist, operated on the young boy's mouth, which did not prove to be sucessful.

• Illness, 28 Apr 1961, Clackamas County, Oregon. ²³ Wendell and his sister Josie Lilas traveled to Oregon to assist their brother, James Earl, with some home remodeling projects. Harriett and her husband, Laury LeRoy Kreider took Wendell and Edna to the Omaha train station and said upon returning that Wendell wasn't feeling well, but felt well enough to travel. He was ill the entire train trip from Omaha to Oregon. Harriett was told later that Wendell was in the bathroom of the house when other occupants her a 'thud'. They could not open the door due to Wendell having fallen against it. The 'rescue squad' men had to remove the door from the hinges to remove the body. Wendell, who loved train rides, got his last train ride back to Omaha.
