Per the Files of Eleanor Witt: James was born James Edward Conkling. At some point the "g" was dropped from the surname.
The 1880 Census lists the family's surname as "Conkling". In addition to James' wife and children, a nephew Frederic Conkling (age 12, b in IL) is a laborer; father b in NY, mother b in IL) living with the family. A Frederic Stillwell is living with the family as well. He is 19 and a laborer. His parents were both born in NY.
