  Medical Notes:

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle; Cardiomyopathy. Myocarditis is an uncommon disorder caused by viral infections such as coxsackie virus, adenovirus, and echovirus. It may also occur during or after various viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. The condition may be caused by exposure to chemicals or allergic reactions to certain medications and it can be associated with autoimmune diseases. The heart muscle becomes inflamed and weakened, causing symptoms of heart failure, which may mimic a heart attack.
A contributing factor to his death was "Tertiary Lues", a Venereal Disease. This diagnosis was confirmed by the "Kahn's test", a simple quantitative precipitation test for syphilis. Used in several modifications. The precipitation agent is an alcoholic extract of bovine heart with cholesterol added. Kahn's test is faster and simpler than the Wassermann test - which required a two-day incubation period - and can be completed in a matter of minutes. However, it can also be inaccurate and show false positive and negative results.
