• Obituary, 28 Aug 1907, Canton, Fulton County, Illinois, USA. 816 Canton Daily Ledger: Joseph M. Whitehill Death of an Old and Highly Respected Resident of Fulton County Tuesday Evening Joseph M. Whitehill died at 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, at the home of his son-in-law, George Van Nortwick, 166 East Birch street. Death was due to paralysis, by which Mr. Whitehill was first attacked on Wednesday morning last week. A second attack came Sunday morning, and from that time the sick man failed to regain consciousness. Joseph M. Whitehill, was born in Putman (sic) county, W. Va., Aug. 27, 1843, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Whitehill, to Fulton county, in 1862. They settled on a farm in the vicinity of Canton, and five years later occurred the marriage of Joseph Whitehill to Miss Sophie Van Dyke. Mrs. Whitehill died three years ago, after which time Mr. Whitehill made his home with his daughter in Canton. Of a family of three children, two survive. They are William Whitehill and Mrs. George Van Nortwick of Canton. The oldest child, a daughter, died in infancy. There is one grandchild son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Nortwick. Other near relatives living are five brothers and one sister. They are Z. A. Whitehill, of Tazewell county; Dr. J. C. Whitehill, of Shenandoah, Iowa; Samuel J., Matthew B., and John Whitehill who also reside in Iowa and Mrs. B. H. Messler, of Canton. Mr. Whitehill was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and by all who knew him in his long residence in Canton and vicinity he was held in high esteem. The relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held at the home, at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, and interment will be in the Norris cemetery.
